Buying pet gear that actually gets used

The measurement matters more than the model
Most of what goes wrong with pet gear is a measurement. A bed a dog hangs off gets ignored in favour of the sofa. A gate an inch too narrow gets pushed over. A basking lamp at the wrong distance reads fine on the box and wrong on a thermometer. Every product page here carries the numbers before it carries the adjectives.
That is why this range is weighted towards the things an animal uses every day rather than towards the things that photograph well.
Buy for weight, then for size
The commonest mistake with a first bed, crate or pen is buying something the animal will grow into. A puppy in an adult crate does not settle, and a kitten on an adult scratching post does not use it.
Internal dimensions on a bed, opening width on a gate, wattage and socket type on a lamp, litres an hour on a fogger: those are the numbers we publish near the top of each page, because they decide whether the thing gets used or sits in a cupboard.
